Welcome to BiometricBase.com, your number one source for biometric products. Biometric devices have been hitting the scene in full force and causing a buzz in both excitement as well as hearing paranoid calls for "Big Brother". As the technology catches on there are new arenas where these devices can be applied.

What are biometrics?

Biometrics are the methods used in uniquely recognizing and identifying humans. Some of the methods used in biometrics are fingerprint scanners, iris scanners, face recognition, DNA, palm readers, and voice recognition. Biometrics are increasingly being used for security purposes. You can find biometric readers on door locks, safes, laptops and many other items you want to restrict access to.

Why biometric security systems?

In today's world we are surrounded by electronic devices, from ATMs, to smart phones; laptops, to home alarms. Many of these require passwords or PINs for the operator to use. It is not uncommon for people to need to memorize up to 30 different passwords for their day to day life. Biometrics allows you to use a unique physical characteristic to secure a device, rather than password or PIN. In addition they are great for securing devices that multiple users will need to access, with out worry that they password will be "leaked", and fall into the wrong hands.

How do biometric readers work?

First there is enrollment, which is when the device records basic information about the users, such as names or unique identification numbers, it then records the identifying characteristic such as your fingerprint.

The device then stores that data. Usually the devices do not store images of the identifier, but rather converts them into graphs or unique data ids. When you next use the biometric reader, it takes a new scan of your identifier, and turns it into the same type of graph or data string, and compares to those stored in database. If they match, you are granted access.
